Every Indian just lost their cool when Deadpool opened to Mera Joota Hai Japani, all thanks to crazy ass Dopinder. (He is dope!) But this is not the only instance when a desi song has been featured in a Hollywood movie. Remember the Indian astronaut, Shariff from Gravity? He was also humming the same classic minutes before floating debris made a hole in his face.
These are only two of the many times reference to Hindi movies and songs has been made in American movies. It is not really something new. Here are a few other times, Hollywood took help of desi numbers.
1. Mera Joota Hai Japani in Deadpool (2016)
The Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds that opened in the theatres on February featured the phenomenally popular song Mera Joota Hain Japani from Raj Kapoor-Nargis starrer Shree 420. The movie also featured Kabhi Humne Nahin Socha Tha.
2. Chaiyya Chaiyya in Inside Man (2006)
The Denzel Washington-Clive Owen-Jodie Foster starrer featured the very popular song Chaiyya Chaiyya from the Shah Rukh Khan-Manisha Koirala movie Dil Se..
3. Chamma Chamma in Moulin Rouge! (2001)
The catchy Chamma Chamma from the movie China Gate featured in the Nicole Kidman-Ewan McGregor starrer Moulin Rouge! It featured as the opening song for Kidman's Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend performance.
4. Mera Mann Tera Pyaasa & Wada Na Tod in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)
Two of Mohammad Rafi's songs feature in the scene where Joel and Clementine played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are in the living room and she announces that she is going to marry him one day.
5. Lehron Ki Tarha Yaadein in Shaun Of The Dead (2004)
Kishore Kumar's Lehron Ki Tarha Yaadein plays in the background as Shaun, played by Simon Pegg walks in to a departmental store just as the zombie outbreak begins. Don't miss the Hindi announcement in the radio about the outbreak!
6. Mundian Tu Bach Ke Rahi in the trailer for The Dictator (2011)
Punjabi MC's popular track that featured in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Boom was used for the trailer of Sacha Baron Cohen's wildly inappropriate comedy The Dictator.
7. Chalka Chalka Re in Accidental Husband (2008)
The popular song from Rani Mukherjee-Vivek Oberoi starrer Saathiya featured in the Uma Thurman flick. The part of Chalka Chalka Re used in the movie is a Tamil wedding song. The film also used the song, Swasame from Tamil film, Thenali.
8. Jaan Pehchaan in Ghost World (2001)
The Scarlett Johansson starrer Ghost World opened to Jaan Pehchaan from Gumnaam.
9. Chori Chori Hum Gori Se Pyaar Karenge in The Guru (2002)
The dancing guru grooved to the beats of Chori Chori Hum Gori Se Pyaar Karenge from Mela. Don't ask why.
10. Bombay Theme in Lord Of War (2005)
The melodious Bombay Theme by AR Rahman composed for Bombay was used in the Nicolas Cage starrer, Lord Of War.
