Islam holds its name in the most followed religions in the world. Islamic people believe in following a daily routine that makes them feel more connected to the Almighty and offer prayers that they call as Namaaz. But, there is something called fatwa in the laws of Islam. A fatwa is a nonbinding but authoritative legal opinion or learned interpretation or a ruling on a point of Islamic law given by a recognized authority.
So, there are a lot of fatwas that are issued by knowledgeable and intellectual people of the Islamic community. And, since recent years, some fatwas have been issued against some of the celebrities and organizations for one or more reasons. And guess what, these reasons don’t always make a lot of sense. Some reasons for issuing fatwas are absolutely weird and have created a lot of controversy in the country.

1. Fatwa against A.R. Rahman for a the movie ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’
This movie was released in 2015 and is set in the sixth century. The story of the movie revolves around the childhood of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The movie was made in Iran. A.R. Rahman directed the music in the movie and a fatwa was issued against A.R. Rahman by a Sunni Muslim group located in Mumbai, India.
2. Fatwa against Harivansh Ri Bachchan for Madhushala
This book was published in 2015 and is a book of 135 Ruba’i, verses of four lines, composed by Harivansh Rai Bachchan, the father of Amitabh Bachchan. His work is truly appreciated for its deep depictions and Sufi incantations. The title of the book, Madhushala, translates to The House of Wine, and a fatwa was issued against Harivansh Rai Bachchan because he was praising wine.
3. Fatwa against Salman Khan for his Madame Tussaud’s Wax Statue
Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum of London is famous worldwide for making very similar wax statues of famous people and celebrities. Salman Khan, who is among the most renowned actors of Bollywood, had to deal with a fatwa issued against him because he permitted the Madame Tussaud’s Museum to create his wax statue.

4. Fatwa against Shah Rukh Khan, for his comments and words against Islam
Not even the king of Bollywood was spared from a fatwa, which was issued against his name. The fatwa was issued against him for allegedly making wrong accusations and comments against Islam. It said that someone making a remark like that is struck out of Islam. Shah Rukh Khan clearly denied all the accusations and said that he was misquoted. The fatwa was then dismissed.
5. Fatwa against Veena Malik for her show, and acting role
The Pakistani actress Veena Malik had been noted for a fatwa issued in her name. The communication was made for her “objectionable” pictures on some websites. She was also criticized for demeaning the sacred institution of “Nikah” because she had signed a contract where her role was to choose a groom for herself at a Reality Show ‘Swayamvar called Veena ka Vivah.’
6. Fatwa against Sonu Nigam for his controversial tweet about Azaan
On April 16, 2017, Sonu Nigam tweeted:
God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India”, “And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam. Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?
This caused a major slamming of Sonu Nigam all over India. This was the reason why a fatwa was issued against Sonu. Maulvi Syed Shah Atef said that Rs. 10 Lakh will be awarded to shave Sonu’s head off, to which Sonu replied, “Today at 2 pm Aalim will come to my place, and shave my head. Keep your 10 lakhs ready Maulvi.”

7. Fatwa against Mosque Rebuilt by Indian Army
This is probably the lamest reason for issuing a fatwa. The fatwa did state that the mosque should only be built by Muslims, and because the mosque was built by the Indian Army, where people of different religions were also involved, the mosque stands inappropriate. The fatwa was issued by Mufti in Kashmir.
8. Fatwa against Salman Rushdie for his novel
His fourth novel, “The Satanic Verses”, published in 1988, was inspired by Prophet Muhammad. The novel was amazingly portrayed, but some Muslim groups found that the novel depicted a very false image of the prophet, so a fatwa was issued against his name.
9. Fatwa against Taslima Nasreen
Hajj and Eid-ul-Zuha are two very integral parts of Islam, and hold significantly high religious importance. The Bangladeshi author was slammed for her controversial remarks on Hajj and Eid-ul-Zuha, and thus a fatwa was issued against her name.
10. Fatwa against Muslims who join BJP
It was declared by Imran Kidwai, that a fatwa would be released for those Muslims that join BJP, to stop them from doing so.
11. Fatwa against Sania Mirza for her clothing
Sania is a very well-known player of Lawn Tennis. She was accused by the Muslim groups, for wearing Lawn Tennis clothes while playing Lawn Tennis. The communities want her to wear long tunics and headscarves while playing.
