Directed by Deepa Mehta, Fire is a 1996 Indo-Canadian erotic romantic drama film that features Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das in "unconventional love" after the two feel trapped in their respective marriages. Released at a time when homosexuality wasn't much talked about in the country, Fire beauitfully portrayed the relationship between the two women.

Aligarh is a heartbreaking biographical drama about a professor who was suspended from his job after a sting operation reveals his sexual orientation. The movie highlights the shaming he suffers throughout after the incident. The movie is based on the real life events of Ramchandra Siras, who was a professor of Marathi and the head of the Classical Modern Indian Languages in Aligarh Muslim University.
