Today, Bollywood may be relying on sexist or regressive jokes to make people laugh. But, that wasn’t always the case. Bollywood has given us some really good movies that are clean humour. These are the movies that you can watch with your family without being worried about uncomfortable dirty jokes. You can watch these movies in a carefree manner, not cringing at skimpy costumes and rolling your eyes after the bad puns.
Though there are many clean humour movies from an earlier era, we have compiled this list from the last 30 years! Here are 11 such movies that not only offered clean humour, but also left us with an inspiring message! Laughter with a message? Where are such movies now?
1. Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993)
It is hard to not fall in love with this movie. With beautiful characterization, both Juhi Chawla and Aamir’s characters touch your heart and soul. This movie has charmed every adult and kid alike.
2. Andaaz Apna Apna (1994)
This movie is a cult classic that we can never get bored of. This movie might have tanked at the box office, but it has become quite popular in recent times. The movie is so memorable that many of us quote this movie’s dialogues to our friends!
3. Hera Pheri (2000)
The movie turned out to be a sleeper superhit that made many laugh. With power-packed performances of Paresh Rawal, Suneil Shetty, and Akshay Kumar, this movie, even after two decades, still makes us laugh.
4. Hungama (2003)
Hungama is another reminder of how sometimes even simple movies can leave the audience entertained. This simple movie makes you laugh at all the right junctions. This is the movie people love to watch on a lazy Sunday.
5. Munnabhai MBBS (2003)
We don’t think any gangster received so much love from the audience, the way Munnabhai and Circuit did. Circuit stole the show even as Munnabhai reformed himself into a good and responsible citizen and impressed us all. The movie also gave us a surprising talent – Boman Irani.
6. Malaamal Weekly (2006)
A comedy movie with a very nice lesson in the end! How would a simple villager react if he won the lottery jackpot? Malamaal Weekly captures the idea in a humorous way, highlighting the social issues that affect every village. This light-hearted comedy ends with a signature Priyadarshan climax.
7. Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006)
This is one of the most intelligent comedy movies ever made by Bollywood. Anupam Kher’s portrayal as a middle-class family man remains one of the best ever. There is no doubt that a lot of effort went behind making this small-budget film.
8. Bheja Fry (2007)
Can anyone else make frustration look as comical as Rajat Kapoor? Can anyone be as annoyingly funny as Vinay Pathak? This movie will make you roll in laughter and leave you exasperated, every single time!
9. 3 Idiots (2009)
‘All Izz Well’. Need we say more? This beautiful movie is a perfect watch for dark and tough days!
10. Queen (2013)
The beautiful transformational story of Rani who found herself in the most unexpected circumstances. Rani’s naïve outlook toward real-life situations added light humour to this inspiring movie!
11. Hindi Medium (2017)
Such a well-written plot with great dialogues, you just couldn’t stop laughing as the story unfolds. Irrfan Khan plays a comic role instead of his signature intense ones. And in such a well-written plot, he aced the comic role with extreme ease.
We would certainly want to watch more of these movies! We don’t want toilet humour and skimpy silhouette scenes. We want comedy movies that not only make us laugh but also leave us with positivity and a message!
