Author Shobhaa De has always spoken her mind fearlessly and unafraid of backlash. Known as the ‘Jackie Collins of India’, De is known for her unique depiction of socialites and sex in her work. Aligning to her interests, De has now commented on the ongoing sex scene controversy featured in the film Oppenheimer.

Bringing her argument to I&B Minister Anurag Thakur’s attention, Shobhaa tweets, “#OppenheimerMovie left me speechless. Brilliant sounds hollow. Oh, about the controversy around the sex scene and the Bhagavad Gita... errrr....so many 5-Star hotels place The Gita and Bible in every room. Next to the bed, where countless couples copulate. Nobody objects @ianuragthakur.”

Soon after her tweet went viral, the internet jumped with mixed reactions.

One user wrote, “Where was the Gita shown in the movie? Was it really?”

Another user wrote, “Never ever... Ever... Saw Gita in a hotel room... Yes, have seen Bible in hotel rooms though... but that has an evangelical perspective.”

One supported Shobhaa’s remark and said, “That’s my biggest question? Is sex something really dirty? Is it a Crime? Sex is celebrated in India in our scriptures and our temples. How can something that creates life be dirty or hurtful to people’s sentiments is beyond my imagination.”

For the unversed, the concerned scene only features a Sanskrit verse instead of the entire holy scripture.

Cillian Murphy who plays Oppenheimer in the film is shown having sex with psychologist Jean Tatlock (played by Florence Pugh) where she asks him to read a verse from purported Gita. Neither the name, title nor cover mentions this Hindu epic in any manner and just appears to be a usual Sanskrit book.

Oppenheimer then reads out the verse Jean points at: “Now, I have become Death, destroyer of the world.”

As the controversy around it roars, Cillian Muphy in a recent interview has called the sex scene powerful. He told Sydney Morning Herald, “Those scenes were written deliberately. [Nolan] knew that those scenes would get the movie the rating that it got. And I think when you see it, it’s so f**king powerful. And they’re not gratuitous. They’re perfect.”

Fueling the already distorted audience due to communal tension in India, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently tweeted, “Irony is that an American nuclear scientist Oppenheimer read the BhagwadGeeta which I doubt even 0.0000001 % of Indians read (sic).”
