Do You Know Mithun Chakraborty Was A Member Of Naxalite Before Entering In Films, Read His Soul-Stirring Story To Fame!
Bollywood veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty recently celebrated his 67th birthday on 16 June. The actor became a household name for his role in film Disco Dancer. He has appeared in about 350 films including Bengali, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Telugu and Punjabi movies.
Well, you will be surprised to know that Mithun Chakraborty was a Naxalite before joining cinema. However, an accident had changed his life and he had left the Naxalite gang and returned to his family.
Born on 16 June, 1950 the actor’s real name is Gourang Chakraborty. Prior to joining the films, he had done a course of acting from the Pune Film Institute.
From Naxalite to acting:
Very few people knows that Mithun was a Naxalite before coming to the film industry. The actor was in the group of Bengal Naxalites and fought for their cause and was even in the ‘Wanted List’ of the Bengal police. However he abandoned Naxalism, when his brother died in an accident and Mithun had to support his family. He returned to his family and left the Naxalite fold, even though this posed a grave risk to his own life. During his days as a Naxalite, he became friends with Ravi Ranjan, a popular Naxal figure, known to his friends as ‘Bhaa’ (the ultimate savior). Bhaa was known for his manipulational skills and oratory abilities.
After returning to his family from the clutches of Naxalism, his family advised him to join FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) where he did graduation in acting.

Mithun Chakraborty made his debut in the 1976 Mrinal Sen-directed film Mrigaya. He than went on to act in romantic and family dramas such as Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Ghar Ek Mandir, Pyaar Jhukta Nahin, Swarag Se Sunder and Pyaar Ka Mandir.
Marriage with Yogeeta Bali:
In 1979, Mithun got married to model Helena Luke but, the marriage ended shortly. He then married actress Yogeeta Bali, who he met in 1979. The couple has 3 sons Mimoh, Rimoh, Namashi and daughter Dishani.
During the 1980s, Chakraborty had a love affair with popular actress Sridevi. Sridevi had fallen in love with Mithun Chakraborty on the sets of Rakesh Roshan’s Jaag Utha Insan (1984). during 1980s. But Mithun forgotten that he is already married to Yogeeta Bali.
Sridevi had come in between Mithun and his wife Yogeeta Bali and are rumored to have got married secretly with Mithun 1985. While there is no strong proof of it, there are several sources and reports which confirm this story. The actor’s wikipedia account too states that she was married to Mithun for three years, but they divorced in 1988. After his marriage with Sridevi had ended, he returned to his previous wife Yogeeta Bali.

Mithun got his first break in 1979:
Even after winning the National Award in the first film, Mithun did not get any special advantage. He also seen in supporting role in ‘Do Anjaane’ and ‘Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan’. He rose to stardom with 1979 low budget film Surakshaa. The film was so successful, that many movies starring Chakraborty in the lead were launched. Mithun Chakraborty literally ruled Bollywood in 1980s, with the brand of impossible heroics and made-for-the-front-row lines as he starred in over 110 releases in this decade.

Gained fame as a renowned dancer:
He became a blockbuster star with 1982 film, Disco Dancer. The song “I’m a Disco Dancer …” is still popular. Even today, youngsters copy the “Mithun-style dance”. After the success of the movie ‘Disco Dancer’, the image of Mithun Chakraborty became a ‘dancing star’.

Not only in dance, he also gained fame for his action:
The actor is a trained in martial arts with black belt. He did not only shoot films with his dancing style but also showed the action too. He was producers first choice in low budget films. He did dozens of action and drama films. Along with Bollywood, he has acted in regional films. In addition, he has also judged TV reality shows ‘Dance Bengali Dance’ and ‘Dance India Dance’ (2009). He was the Grandmaster of the show.
