Bollywood happens to be the biggest movie industry in India, producing more than a thousand movies every year. Awards are a great way to encourage talent and honor it. In Bollywood, there are many celebrities that received awards for their valuable contributions to cinema and got honored for it. The truth is, everyone craves for the appreciation that comes along with it. The awards inspire them to perform even better as it encourages their talent and their efforts.
But it would surprise you that some celebrities in Bollywood actually refused some of the biggest awards without thinking of the stature with their reasons. Actors like Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn aren’t known for attending these award ceremonies because they believe in the fact that these awards are fake and they focus on getting the work satisfaction.
Here we have a list of such celebrities who refused awards and why!
1. Shashi Kapoor
He was a well-known actor as well as a film producer. He is one who has received four national awards and two Filmfare awards. Shashi Kapoor accounts to be the only actor who has ever refused a national award. The awards were given to him for this great delivery in the movie Dharma Putra. He believed that his performance wasn’t great enough for the award.

2. Lata Mangeshkar
She is also known as the Nightingale of Bollywood and is one of the biggest playback singers in Bollywood. Lata has a big list of awards under her name that includes Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, etc.
Lata Mangeshkar once denied accepting her first Filmfare award because the trophy was designed as a lady that didn’t have any clothes on. So, the Filmfare team redesigned the award and gave it to her.
3. Sonu Nigam
He is known for his wonderful voice. His singing abilities are a wonder because he can sing in many scales and hit every note. He is a playback singer, live performer, actor, composer and also an amazing host. He is a recipient of one national award, two Filmfare awards in Hindi and two Filmfare awards in the South.
In 1997, Sonu refused to take the award at the Filmfare as the best song for the song Sandese Aate Hai. The reason why he rejected the award was that the song was sung by both Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathore and therefore both of them deserved the same honor.

4. Vyjayanthimala
She was a great actress of her time. Her movies were regarded as one of the best in the industry. She played a major role in the movie Devdas by Bimal Roy, as Chandramukhi, and in 1955, she was given the best-supporting actress award from Filmfare. She rejected the award because she believed that she played the lead role and not a supporting role in the movie.
5. Suchitra Sen
There was one time when she dominated the Hindi and Bengali cinema. Suchitra also played a role in the movie Devdas by Bimal Roy. She was awarded India’s biggest cinema honor, Dadasaheb Phalke Award but she didn’t receive it in the public award ceremony as she wanted to take it in a private ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, but her wish wasn’t accepted.

6. Kangana Ranaut
Kangana Ranaut is one of the most beautiful and talented actresses and is popularly known for her attitude for not being able to get along with award shows. Therefore, she never attends an award show but was invited to accept her award for the Best Actress Award at the Melbourne Film Festival, for her very successful movie, Tanu Weds Manu.
7. Kumar Sanu
Undoubtedly, an excellent Indian playback singer, he has done many soulful and trending songs in Bollywood, in Hindi, and in the Bengali language. He was awarded five times with Filmfare Award for the Best Singer. Because he had won so many times, he decided to reject the award so as to give an opportunity to the upcoming singers.
8. Prithviraj Kapoor
He kicked his career by working in silent Hindi movies. Recipient of Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his amazing performance in movies. He had once refused to take the award at the Filmfare for the Best Supporting Actor in the movie Mughal-E-Azam as he believed that he deserved an award for the Best Actor.

9. Salim Khan
Salim Khan is one of the best writers in Bollywood. He is the father of Salman Khan and he refused the Padma Shri in 2015 because he believes that the contributions deserved higher honor than a Padma Shri.
10. Reena Roy
Regarded as one of the best actresses of Bollywood, Reena has played many major roles from 1972 to 1985. She was awarded the Filmfare Award in 1977 for Apnapan for the Best Supporting Actress. But Reena rejected the award because she believed that she didn’t play a supporting role, but a lead role.
