Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s scandalous romance dominated the gossip sections of all major newspapers back in the day. Salman was accused of physically abusing Aishwarya, and the two ended their relationship as a result. They collaborated in one of Bollywood’s most memorable films, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Aishwarya and Salman started dating in 1997, according to reports. Salman was already in a relationship with Somy Ali at the time, and he was a well-known Bollywood celebrity.

Following the success of the film, rumours began to circulate that the lead actor and actress were dating. Salman’s girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai, became the buzz of the town. Somy Ali left Salman Khan following his relationship with Aishwarya Rai and moved to the United States.

Salman and Aishwarya became closer, and the actress was thought to be close to Salman’s sisters Alvira and Arpita Khan. Khan family was quite happy with the relationship but Aishwarya’s family was against it.
During one of the night in 2001, Salman reached Aishwarya’s apartment and started banging the door of Aishwarya’s house asking her to let him in. The neighbors who witnessed the incident told media that Salman wanted to propose her for marriage but Aish wasn’t ready for the same.

When Salman and Aishwarya were together, they experienced everything from romance to controversy. In a 2002 interview with the Times of India, Aishwarya Rai discussed her terrible breakup with Salman. Aish said,
“Salman and I broke up last March, but he isn’t able to come to terms with it. After we broke up, he would call me and talk rubbish. He also suspected me of having affairs with my co-stars. I was linked up with everyone, from Abhishek Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan. There were times when Salman got physical with me, luckily without leaving any marks. And I would go to work as if nothing had happened.”
According to Pinkvilla, Aishwarya told another leading daily about the different stories of Salman Khan and his misbehaviour. She said,
“I stood by him enduring his alcoholic misbehaviour in its worst phases and in turn I was at the receiving end of his abuse (verbal, physical and emotional), infidelity and indignity. That is why like any other self-respecting woman I ended my relationship with him.”
Aishwarya has previously stated that Salman was having an affair while he was on relationship with her. Salman Khan, as reported by Pinkvilla, reacted to these charges in an interview with a top daily a few months after Aishwarya’s interview, saying,
“No. I have never beaten her. Anyone can beat me up. Any fighter here on the sets can thrash me. That is why people are not scared of me. I do get emotional. Then I hurt myself. I have banged my head against the wall; I have hurt myself all over. I cannot hurt anyone else. I have only hit Subhash Ghai. Yet, I apologized to him the next day. There are times when you do get out of control. That person hit me with a spoon, almost broke a plate on my face, pissed on my shoes and grabbed me by the neck. I could not control myself. And see what happened. The next day, I had to go and apologize.”
According to reports, Aishwarya made a public announcement that she will no longer work with Salman in the future for the sake of her well-being and self-respect. She further claimed that Salman Khan’s Chapter was a nightmare in her life and that she is relieved that it is finally ended.
