Bollywood superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, and Hrithik Roshan among others have been ruling the film industry since decades now.

Over the years, they delivered many record-breaking hits and still have several interesting projects in their kitty.

At times, they also opt for offbeat projects which may not rake in the expected moolah at the box office but receive humongous critical-acclaim.

From SRK’s Swades to Hrithik Roshan-starrer Guzaarish, let’s look at 4 critically-acclaimed Bollywood films featuring superstars which flopped at the ticket window.

Swades

After the insane success of Aamir Khan’s Lagaan, filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker teamed up with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for Swades. Ever since its announcement, everyone was expecting another big success from the director. The film was released in 2004 and opened to rave reviews from critics praising the performances, story, screenplay, and music. Shockingly, Swades was not a commercial success and was regarded ahead of its time.

Guzaarish

After the debacle of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor-starrer Saawariya (2007), director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was expecting a lot from Guzaarish. Featuring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles, the film revolves around a paralyzed magician (played by Hrithik) who files a petition seeking permission from the court to end his life. It marked Hrithik and Aish’s third collaboration after the success of Dhoom 2 and Jodha Akbar. However, despite promising reviews, the romantic drama wasn’t a box office success.

Raincoat

Directed by Rituparno Ghosh, the 2004 release Raincoat starred Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai as the lead pair. Reportedly, the film was an adaptation of O. Henry’s short story The Gift Of The Magi. It revolves around two separated lovers who meet again after a long time and realize the truth about their lives. Despite getting critical acclaim, it was a huge disappointment at the ticket window. Raincoat even won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film (Hindi).

Lakshya

Featuring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta in the lead roles, Lakshya was Farhan Akhtar’s first release after the success of his maiden directorial venture Dil Chahta Hai. A promising cast, patriotic storyline, great music, and a huge hype - everything was going on in the film’s favor. However, upon release, the coming-of-age war drama earned good reviews and failed to fair well commercially.
