Disturbing Bollywood Movies That Are Definitely Not For Faint Hearted

1. NH 10 (2015)

Bringing attention to a highly sensitive topic of honor killings, this movie left many terrified. How the makers brutally captured the depiction of violence left many in the audience shaken. With the powerful screenplay and talented actors, this movie kept us at the edge of our seats. Many of us were terrified for days when we watched the movie for the first time.

2. Bandit Queen (1994)

Based on the real-life of dacoit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi, this Shekhar Kapur film faced many obstructions. The Censor Board raised objections about the excessive violence and aggressive portrayal of gang rape. Many of us weren’t allowed to watch this movie when it was released for the first time. But, after growing up when we watched it, it definitely left us terrified and shocked for days.

3. Sangharsh (1999)

How could we create a list of disturbing movies and not mention Sangharsh? With Ashutosh Rana’s stellar performance, Sangharsh brought light to the disturbing ritual of sacrificing children for religious appeasement. No one can deny that Rana’s portrayal of a saree-clad religious fanatic is disturbingly impactful. The movie makes a brave attempt to showcase the ugly reality of the society we live in.

4. Satya (1998)

With dark characters and excessive violence, this movie is about a naïve immigrant who gets mingled with Mumbai’s underworld. With talented performers like Manoj Bajpayee, Urmila Matondkar, Shefali Chhaya, and J.D. Chakravarthy, Ram Gopal Verma created this brutally honest masterpiece that sends a chill down your spine.

5. Dushman (1998)

Another Ashutosh Ranna starrer that made it to this list is Dushman. Ashutosh Rana’s portrayal of a cold-blooded psychopath was so disturbing that it gave many of us sleepless nights. The portrayal of the psychopath was so honest that by the end of the movie, many of us started hating Rana.

6. Sadma (1983)

Another movie that left us disturbed for days was Sadma. No one could have imagined that the simple story of a school teacher (played by Kamal Haasan) and a girl (played by Sridevi) who lost her memory, could have such a lasting impact. Throughout the movie, Kamal Haasan goes out of his way to take care of Sridevi. And, in no time, the bond between them grew stronger and they become a family. But, in the end, as Sridevi regains her memory, she forgets everything about Kamal Haasan. The climax scene of Kamal Hassan trying hard to remind Sridevi of the time they spent together broke so many of us.

7. Anjaam (1994)

After Darr, another movie where SRK shone in a negative role is Anjaam. As an obsessed lover, how SRK ruins a life of a girl, who rejected her, makes this movie difficult to watch. With SRK smashing Madhuri’s husband with a bat to a pregnant Madhuri being kicked in the womb, this movie has many gory scenes that leave you disturbed.

8. Gangajaal

Based on a true story in Bhagalpur, where 30 or so prisoners were blinded by prison guards and police in the 1980s, this movie has many scenes that are so disturbing that it can leave even the bravest of souls with a lump in their throats.

9. Shool (1999)

The powerful and hard-hitting movie is about an honest policeman, who is failed by the system. As this honest policeman (played by Manoj Bajpayee) takes on the mighty MLA/goon in Bihar, he is victimized by the corrupt system. He ends up losing his wife and child to the hands of his tormentors. This movie captures how honest people have to pay a hefty price to stand against corrupt and powerful people.
