Dil Chahta Hai – is the movie that not only touched our hearts but also changed the course of Indian cinema forever. The film that showcased Friendship in a completely different light is still a favorite of so many. With Akash, Sid and Sameer, this unconventional movie broke many stereotypes of Bollywood movies.
But, one thing that left us disappointed was how many in the audience hailed Akash – the problematic character – as a hero. There were many things that were wrong with Akash – he was an egotistic, condescending, cocky, entitled AF manchild!
Sadly, many couldn’t acknowledge how problematic Akash’s character was. Rather, many referred to him as the “coolest” guy in the gang. There were so many who wanted to be like him. But, here are the reasons why he’s goddamn problematic:
He was always mean to this girl who really loved him.
How he bragged about his weird relationship with his Economics professor, Miss Kashyap
When Sid made the painting of a random woman, he just went on to take the opportunity to bring up his alleged affair with a professor.
And, how could you forget his smug look as he spoke of women as his conquests?
He clearly doesn’t understand the meaning of No
During his college graduation party, how he tries hard to woo someone else’s fiancée, even after she had explicitly said that she was genuinely not interested.
And, when he was told to get his act together, he sulked like a child.
You may say that he had his share of issues but he was a great friend. But, was he?
Do you remember how he got Sameer in trouble with his girlfriend and enjoyed it thoroughly?
And, when Sameer asked for his advice to fix his relationship, he gave him this problematic notion of masculinity.
And, look how he couldn’t be bothered to look a little more excited about his best friend’s first major exhibition. Though Sameer was heartbroken, what was Akash doing besides letching (again) at women?!
He lacked the empathy to understand how Sid felt for Tara (Dimple Kapadia).
Rather than supporting his friend, he made nasty remarks about the woman his friend loved.
And, how for the sake of his shallow male ego, he refused to repair his friendship.
Do you remember when he went on to stop Shalini’s wedding ONE day before the ceremony, he didn’t hesitate to threaten her fiancé with violence?
It is quite shocking how he finds flaws in others so quickly but has no self-awareness.
We wish Akash would have focused on the much-needed advice by wise Sid and made an attempt to be a better person!
