Despite high hopes, the year 2022 hasn’t turned out to be fruitful for Bollywood, in general. Recently released big-budget movies like Lal Singh Chaddha starring Aamir Khan and Raksha Bandhan starring Akshay Kumar failed to pique the audience's interest. Much like the 15 out of 20 most-anticipated Bollywood films of this year that tanked at the box office. Top actors, big production houses, and massive budgets are no longer a guarantee of commercial success.

This year, only two films — Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and The Kashmir Files — managed to achieve commercial success, rendering the hopes for a strong post-pandemic recovery of Bollywood in a lurch.

The business graph for South Indian films, on the other hand, has only seen an upward movement with their movies thriving and smashing box office records. While Bollywood is struggling to give even one major box office hit, South Indian movies are scoring big in the Hindi heartland.

Movies like RRR, KGF 2, Karthikeya 2 have successfully made millions at the box office across the country. Known to be doing well in their own region, the Telugu, Tamil, Malayam and Kannada language movies are now being dubbed and released in other parts of the country. The result is that their box-office collection is surpassing that of their Bollywood counterparts by a huge margin.

"Historically, Bollywood films have seen decent collections even when the content was weak, given the strong fan following of superstars. That seems to have changed with time, with content now being the primary driver," as per a report by Emkay Global Financial Services. As we have already crossed half the year, let’s take a look at the Bollywood flops of 2022 that crashed big time at the box office.

Lal Singh Chaddha to Raksha Bandhan, 6 extremely expensive films made on a budget of over Rs 100 Crore that collapsed at the box office in 2022

1. Shamshera

Big stars, a massive budget, a huge production house — all these factors failed to drive audiences to Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera. The movie which was released last month struggled to stay afloat. Made on a budget of Rs 183 crores, the movie had a lifetime collection of Rs 65-75 crore, per India Today. While the movie was Kapoor’s seventh flop, it was Yash Raj Films’ fourth flop in a row.

2. Samrat Prithviraj

Popular for knowing all the ingredients to create a blockbuster movie, actor Akshay Kumar failed to make numbers at the box office this year. Backed by Yash Raj Films, the historic drama made on a massive budget of Rs 300 crore faced tough competition from Kamal Hassan starrer Vikram and Jurassic World Dominion. The total domestic box office collection of the movie was Rs 64.62 crore, per India Today.

3. Laal Singh Chaddha

Known to be a perfectionist who'd given some masterpieces in the past, Aamir Khan’s Lal Singh Chaddha has turned out to be the actor’s biggest flop since Mela and Thugs of Hindostan. The high-scale remake of Forrest Gump is one of the rare movies to see a dip in the collection on a national holiday. The movie that was made on a budget of Rs 180 crore, had a running total of Rs 46 crore. Khan’s movie is struggling to cross the Rs 50 crore mark with a total of 1300 shows being cancelled by the exhibitors on the first day itself.

4. Raksha Bandhan

Released on a big national holiday weekend of Independence day, the movie miserably crashed at the box office. Akshay Kumar’s third film to have flopped this year, a total of 1000 shows of the film have been cancelled. The movie is being poised as Kumar’s biggest flop leaving behind Samrath Prithviraj and Raksha Bandhan and has collected as low as Rs 34 crore.

5. Radhe Shyam
One thing is for sure, a big cast and magnificent sets are not enough to lure the audience to the theatre anymore. The Prabhas and Pooja Hedge starrer which was made on a budget of Rs 300 crore, just managed to rake Rs 154.90 Crore.

Talking about why the movie tanked at the box office the actor told HT in an interview, “Maybe covid or maybe we missed something in the script. You people know better. May be people don’t want to watch me in that zone, even if they want to watch – may be they expect me to be too good.”

6. Bachchhan Paandey

Featuring on the list is yet another Akshay Kumar starrer. The actor who is known for giving back-to-back hits has had a terrible year with each movie of his crumbling at the box office and failing to rake a decent amount of money. A remake of Bobbi Simha’s Jigarthanda, the movie saw a fall in both reviews and box-office collection. Said to be made on a budget of Rs 150 crore, the movie managed to mint an approximate figure of Rs 50 crore.
