Based on the real-life incident of the Nirbhaya gang-rape case, the Netflix series Delhi Crime has won the 48th International Emmy Award in the Best Drama Series category. It is the first Indian Drama Series to receive an Emmy Award.
While quoting the writer and director Richie Mehta, The Indian Express mentioned:
“I dedicate this award to all the women who not just endure the violence that so many men inflict on them, but are then tasked to solve the problem. Finally, to the tireless mother, and her daughter. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about you both and what the world subjected you two to. And I hope none of us ever forget that.”
The series captured how Shefali Shah who played the role of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, inspired by Chhaya Sharma, unveils the reality behind the ugly incident. While sharing her gratitude towards the awards, she mentioned to Hindustan Times:
“The story needed to be taken to the world. I’m possessive and partial to the show. For me, it has always been a winner. The nomination at the Emmys was a humbling experience because here we’re talking about shows that are picked from across the globe. Yes, there’s another stamp on it now and it does make a difference. But irrespective, even if hadn’t won, the show is a winner for me. One of the first awards that we won was at the Asian Academy Creative Awards. We also went to the Sundance Film Festival. So every time you get that kind of recognition, it’s incredible.”
Many Netizens came forward to congratulate the team:
