The 90s – the beautiful era, when we were kids and our life was way much simpler and stress-free. Like today’s kids, we might not have OTTs, but we had our share of adorable old cartoons. And, we believe most of these old cartoons were much better than the stupid cartoons that kids of today are forced to endure.
1. DuckTales
Every 90s Indian kid would be able to identify the theme song of DuckTales – ‘Zindagi Toofani Hai’ even if they are deep asleep. We still remember the Hindi voiceover of Uncle Scrooge and his naughty nephews – Huey, Dewey and Louie. Though the nephews were naughty they always managed to save their uncle from dangerous elements! You can watch some of them at Disney+Hotstar.
2. Powerpuff Girls
One of the best 90s cartoons was Powerpuff girls. This was probably the first and one of the only TV shows of the time that started teaching us about feminism. The all-girls cast – Bubbles, Buttercup and Blossom were our superheroes and embodiment of girls’ power and taught us that girls can also be brave and fight against bad people.
3. The Addams Family
With its spooky characters – Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday and Pugsley, this show was one of our favourites. The show revolves around a family facing some threats from a series of recurring villains who want to throw them out of the house or capture one of them.
4. Johnny Bravo
Much before Barney Stinson of ‘How I Met Your Mother’, we had Johny Bravo – a young man who tried to get women to date him, but failed miserably. This show introduced adult humour to many of us for the first time.
5. SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron
Though the show stopped airing in 1990, Indian kids enjoyed it in the early 2000s. And damn, it was so good and funny. Do you remember the fantastic theme song?
6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
One of the best 90s cartoons that made the turtles look super cool. While growing up, Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo and Donatello were our heroes fighting the villains.
7. Batman: The Animated Series
One of the finest adaptations of Batman, this animation show sticks to the Dark Knight of the comics. Even though it was comic in nature, the show dealt with some very powerful aspects.
8. Dexter’s Laboratory
Who doesn’t remember Dexter-the genius and his sister – Dee Dee. It was one of the most popular animated TV shows.
9. Pingu
One of our favourite animation series, Pingu is about a penguin who spends his days with his parents and his baby sister, Pinga, in a town where everyone speaks ‘Penguinese’. Finding himself in troubled situations, Pingu never leaves a chance to learn a lesson.
10. Aladdin
Aladdin is about a street dweller and his adventures. Along with his love interest Princess Jasmine, his pet monkey Abu, the magic carpet, Lago, the parrot and his best friend, the Genie, he fights for the weak.
11. Courage – The Cowardly Dog
Belonging to a very different genre, this horror-comedy series featured Courage – a pink anthropomorphic dog living with an elderly couple. Every episode dealt with a misadventure involving the supernatural.
12. TaleSpin
Based on the adventurous pilot Baloo the bear, the show was one of the most memorable animation TV shows. The show revolved around Baloo, who ran an air cargo freight business, ‘Baloo’s Air Service’. But, when he defaulted on his bills with the bank run by the tiger Sher Khan, he was poached by Rebecca Cunningham.
13. The Jungle Book
This is one of the famous adaptions of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. One of the most memorable and loved animation shows, The Jungle Book was so fun to watch. Like many of us, if you have also grown up watching Mowgli growing up with Baloo and Bagheera, then you know the value of this show!
14. Captain Planet And The Planeteers
This show was extra-special as it made many of us aware of various environmental topics. It reached out to the young generation on environmental-political and certain socio-political issues. It encouraged many of us to fight against ‘pollution’. Gaia, the spirit of planet Earth, gives five magic rings to control nature and Heart to five young people – The Planeteers. By combining their rings these Planeteers can summon Captain Planet, a superhero with all their powers combined.
15. The Scooby-Doo show
This mystery show needs no introduction. Scooby and its gang uncovered mysteries that appear to be supernatural, but always have a human behind them.
16. Tom & Jerry
Featuring the natural enemies – Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse, the show had so many hilarious moments. Throughout the show, Tom attempts to capture Jerry but every time he fails miserably!
17. The Flintstones
This show is set in pre-historic times in the town of Bedrock. Though the characters live in Stone Age, their life resembles so much with the lives of modern life. With dinosaurs and other long-extinct animals co-existing with cavemen, this show is so hilarious and funny!
18. Popeye The Sailor
Who hasn’t heard of Popeye, the sailor who eats spinach and gets stronger?
19. The Little Mermaid
Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid – the animated television series was based on the 1989 Disney film of the same name. It featured the adventures of Ariel as a mermaid prior to the events of the film.

22. SpongeBob Squarepants
The show revolves around the life of a talking sea sponge who lives in an underwater pineapple in the town of Bikini bottom, works at a fast-food restaurant and attends a boating school. The show lives to this day in the form of memes and gifs and more importantly in our hearts.
