2. Sea Hawks

Milind Soman and Madhavan starrer Sea Hawks provided us a great inside view of the Indian Navy members. The Navy is one of the lesser-known divisions of the armed forces. But Sea Hawks did a phenomenal job of capturing what it exactly takes to be a member of the Indian Navy.

3. Powder

Starring Pankaj Tripathi and Manish Choudhary in the lead roles, the show was based on the narcotics trade in Mumbai. The show is available on Netflix.

4. Fauji

Many of us remember Fauji as Shah Rukh Khan’s debut. Fauji is the story about Lt. Abhimanyu Rai who trains to be a good army officer. Having a very well-written script and brilliant acting by SRK, Fauji is of the best Indian TV shows of all time.

5. Captain Vyom

Inspired by Star Trek, Captain Vyom, made many fall in love with the sci-fi genre. Starring Milind Soman as the captain of the team, the show moved around the team capturing all the extremely dangerous criminals who had escaped from the ‘high security space prison’.

This character-driven crime drama show was a hit among the audience.

7. Mahi Way

Unlike many regressive TV shows, this comedy-drama focused on body positivity and the harmful effects of body-shaming much before it was a norm.

8. Pradhanmantri

Hosted by Shekhar Kapoor, Pradhanmantri, was a series of documentaries on different Prime Ministers of India that covered a lot of controversial events.

9. Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne

Heart-touching show about the protagonist – Mungerilal who would daydream about his ‘adventures’.

Many of us weren’t even aware of feminism when Tara showed progressive women taking life heads on. The show starred Navneet Nishan in the lead role, along with Ratna Pathak Shah, Neha Sharad, and Amita Nangia. Despite running for 5 years, the show never became overly melodramatic or catered to flawed moral ideologies.

14. Office Office

Mussaddilal has to deal with the lethargy of government officials in different departments to get small things done. The show highlighted the problems with the officials in the public sector while tickling our funny bones.

Starring Mandira Bedi in the protagonist role, Shanti is an aspiring journalist who tries to make it in a world dominated by men. But, what made it extremely engaging was its nuanced portrayal of a woman who faces challenges head-on, both in her personal and professional life. In case you haven’t watched it yet, with a good story and strong characters, this one is a must-watch.

Swaabhimaan divulges the story of a woman – Svetlana – who finds herself in a battle where there are no real winners. Insecurity, suspicion and fear threaten to erode her vivacious spirit as she struggles to come to terms with her position – that of a pampered mistress whose tycoon patron Keshav Malhotra (Naasir Abdulah) dies leaving her to cope with the ugly aftermath of the tragedy: inheritance wars, succession rights, property entanglements, petty quarrels and above all, the emotional turmoil that threatens to destroy her. As the story progresses, she evolves from an insecure woman into a strong, confident woman, who takes charge of her life.

Surabhi is a benchmark show in Indian television history and is often referred to as ‘one of the best television shows ever made’ that reflected the length and breadth of the Indian culture.

20. Wagle Ki Duniya

The series was set around the everyday struggles, of a nervous sales clerk, Srinivas Wagle, who lived with the prudence of a middle-class person of the time. RK Laxman’s brilliance was very well received by the Indian audience.

21. Banegi Apni Baat

This show covers the life of college-going friends. It gives us a great storyline of these friends as they move through college and eventually start their careers.

22. Flop Show

Who can forget the timeless classic by Jaspal Bhatti? The show didn’t do great when it was first aired but became a cult hit over the years.

23. Just Mohabbat

A beautiful coming-of-age story told from the perspective of a youngster, Just Mohabbat revolved around the life of a boy who befriended a ghost to overcome his problems.

24. Hip Hip Hurray

The show based on the lives of 12th graders turned out to be one of the most popular teen shows of its time and honestly, it still holds up!

25. Astitva

The show had a refreshing story that dealt with a career-oriented woman marrying a man 10 years younger than her. The show focuses on society’s narrow outlook toward relationships that don’t fit a set pattern. With impressive performances and brilliant writing, this show is a must-watch.

26. Hasratein

The progressive show took a refreshing take on extra-marital affairs. Rather than showing the extra-marital in an evil light, the show made an attempt to understand the reason behind it. The show initially starred Seema Kapoor in the lead role, and later Shefali Shah. 

27. Chitrahaar

Chitrahaar was a show that most of us still have a lot of fond memories of. The show televised the videos of the latest songs from Hindi films (Bollywood).

28. Rajani

Starring Priya Tendulkar in the lead role, Rajani is the show that showcased how a housewife deals with the everyday problems that most people encounter, such as school admissions, the attitude of taxi drivers, etc. In short, it was the female counterpart to the famous Office Office, especially with its focus on lax government officials.
