Considering 83 is based on a true tale, the filmmakers had to acquire the rights to make a film about it, as well as pay a significant sum to former cricketers to get their side of the story. According to sources, the producers have paid an amount of Rs. 15 crores to former Indian cricketers who were members of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, with Kapil Dev receiving the largest portion of this sum.

“Before making the film it is important to acquire the rights of the subject and the individual stories of the players the film is based on, especially when it revolves around real-life people of incidents. Keeping this in mind, (makers) paid the original winning team of the 1983 World Cup approximately Rs 15 crore, while Kapil Dev walked away with the lion’s share of around Rs 5 crore for his go-ahead.”
The West Indians were the clear favourites to win the 1983 World Cup, and everyone expected them to do so for the third time in a row, given they had won the previous two World Cups (1975 and 1979) and was playing well at the time. The Indian team, on the other hand, made history by defeating the West Indies in the finals and winning the country’s first-ever cricket World Cup.
