If there is anyone who can portray unconditional love, sacrifice and make a mother role look so easy its Reema Lagoo. She has been an epitome of motherhood in most of the films and Tv show, combining the right amount of love, care, compassion, and fun. But the way she enacted made it seem like that she breathed the character. The actor made us laugh and cry throughout the years. She showed realities of the lives of the mothers in a different light. The actress breathed her last today, but for us, she would always be the all-rounder best ever ‘Ma’ Bollywood had.
Lagoo bagged her first big break in 1988 with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla. She played Juhi’s mom.
Here are some of her iconic roles that she played –
#1 Maine Pyar Kiya
She will be remembered as the favourite Rajshree mother, played a doting mom to Salman Khan for the first time in Maine Pyar Kiya. She played as a traditional but very understanding mother. She supported her son’s love and never treated Suman indifferently because of her class. She played it so well that people at times assumed that she was in real, Salman khan’s mother.

#2 Hum Aapke Hai Koun
She played mom to Madhuri Dixit and Renuka Shahane. As the character, she raises them to be smart and charismatic women. Although a role of traditional mom, her character lets her daughters complete their education, follow their hobbies and also imbibes in them Indian values. She also made the concept of shy ‘samdhan’ really cool.
#3 Hum Saath Saath Hai
She played mom to Mohnish Bahl, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Neelam. In this role, she showed the realities of joint families. There is struggle always, and how important a mother figure is for the family. Although, she later plays a ‘Kekayi’ by banishing Vivek out of her house and company. she comes back to her true persona by the end of the movie.
#4 Kal Ho Na Ho
She played mom to Shah Rukh Khan. She shifts to New York so that her son could get the best possible treatment. This role shows Reema’s impeccable acting skills as she plays an understanding mother that eventually loses her son to cancer.
#5 Tu Tu Mai Mai
Her role in this show is my personal favourite. She played a typical Indian mother-in-law. But she performed it so well! Most of the 90’s kids remember her for this role. Her comic timing and comebacks to her daughter-in-law were phenomenal. She was like any other mother. Loved her daughter-in-law, argued with her but also at the end of the day, supported her.

These five were her iconic roles which we all remember by, but the last two show her impeccable acting skills. She wasn’t just the traditional mother. She had a different and powerful role. She showed us the new definition of being a mother.
Vaastav
In Vastaav, she was memorably powerful as a mother who kills her own son, played by Sanjay Dutt, after he is driven mad by the burdens of his criminal activities. The actress won her fourth Filmfare award for this role.
