The film portrays the incredible journey of the then-Indian team, skippered by Kapil Dev, as they won the World Cup for the first time in the year 1983. India beat West Indies to lift their first title. In the movies, Ranveer Singh plays Kapil Dev while his wife Deepika Padukone plays Romi Dev, Kapil Dev’s wife.

How much did Kapil Dev charge?
Considering the fact that “83” is based on a true story, the filmmakers had to buy the rights to make a movie about it and also pay a huge amount to ex-players. As per Bollywood Hungama, the producers paid Rs. 15 crores to former Team India players who were members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team.
It is to be noted that Kapil Dev received the largest portion of this sum. The report adds that the rest of the squad earned Rs 10 crore. Meanwhile, the former India captain Kapil Dev, who led the team to victory, received the maximum amount of Rs 5 crore.
“Before making the film it is important to acquire the rights of the subject and the individual stories of the players the film is based on, especially when it revolves around real-life people of incidents. Keeping this in mind, (makers) paid the original winning team of the 1983 World Cup approximately Rs 15 crore, while Kapil Dev walked away with the lion’s share of around Rs 5 crore for his go-ahead,” the source added.
