Since the outbreak of the virus and the subsequent lockdown, online streaming platforms have seen a drastic increase in popularity. There has been significant growth in the use of OTT platforms and gradually are on track to be the new normal of the entertainment industry. Owing to that here is a list of 6 movies that were sold to OTT platforms for a whopping sum of money:
1. Laxxmi bomb :
Laxxmi is a horror-comedy film written and directed by Raghava Lawrence. The Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani movie is a remake of the hit Tamil film, “Muni 2: Kanchana”. Laxxmi is the first big-budget Bollywood film that was released on a streaming platform.
It was set to be theatrically released in May of 2020 but was delayed due to the ongoing pandemic. It was later sold to Disney + Hotstar for a whopping 125 crores.
2. Pushpa:
The Rise (Part 01): the Indian- Telegu language age action-drama film stars Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna alongside Fahadh Faasil. It was a major blockbuster and the digital streaming rights were sold to Amazon Prime for 30 crores.
3. Bhuj-The pride of India :
The directorial war film by Abhishek Dudhaiya stars Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi, and Ammy Virk. The theatrical release of the film was delayed due to the pandemic and later was sold to Disney+ Hotstar for ₹110 crores.
4. Dil Bechara :
The coming of age film is an adaptation of the book, “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput alongside Sanjana Sanghi and marks his last appearance in the movies following his death in June 2020. The streaming rights to the movie was sold to Disney + Hotstar for 40 crores.
5. Shakuntala Devi :
The biographical drama is based on the life of the “human computer” Shakuntala Devi stars Vidya Balan in the titular role alongside Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh, and Jisshu Sengupta in supporting roles. Amazon Prime acquired the streaming rights for the movie for 40 crores.
6. Gunjan Saxena :
The Kargil Girl: Another biographical drama that was sold to Netflix for a deal of 50 crores. The film is traced along with the life of one of the first Indian female air-force pilots in combat Gunjan Saxena who is played by Janhvi Kapoor.
