We all have our favourite Bollywood couples, who have made films extra enjoyable and memorable for us. Even if the storylines aren’t great, sometimes, just the chemistry of the lead actors can make a film a hit.

But there are some films that have given us some very unusual actors as couples -- and they have, strangely enough, worked, even though we were all sceptical about their chemistry. Wondering who we’re talking about? Let’s have a look.

Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal in Raazi

We wouldn’t have put these two together for a long time, given that Alia comes from a mainstream background and Vicky, from an indie one. But the two worked like magic on screen and gave us new couple goals.

Kareena Kapoor and Sumeet Vyas in Veere di Wedding

When we first saw photos of Kareena and Sumeet shooting together, we really wondered if they could pull off being a convincing couple who's about to get married. Given that Kareena has worked with the biggest stars in Bollywood and that Sumeet is a rising star from the Indian web series industry, it seemed like a long shot. But we were pleasantly surprised to see them make a mature couple in a healthy relationship, that we would want to be.

Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee in Pari

This unusual couple made quite the perfect pair for a horror flick like Pari. Although their characters also make for an equally unconventional couple, the two actors pulled it off with ease and did not make it looking jarring or odd, at all.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

This seemed like an odd pairing, but once we saw the film we saw how well the two actors went together. Especially since they played such interesting characters, who had an unconventional love story, the chemistry between the two fell right in place.

Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan in Piku

There’s no denying that Piku is one of our favourite films. And one of the things that made it so is the lovely relationship that Deepika and Irrfan’s characters share. It is a very nuanced and delicate friendship-turned-romantic deal, and the two actors fit right into it without making it awkward.

Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur in The Lunchbox

Although the two characters don’t really meet in this film, their love story managed to touch all our hearts. And that’s the marker for good acting and storytelling, right there. Irrfan and Nimrat pulled off their characters brilliantly, so much so that you know, with certainty, that if the two actually met on screen, it would make for an excellent coupling.

Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma in Wake Up Sid

The actors and their characters in the film are, both, starkly different -- which just goes to prove the old adage that opposites attract. Ranbir and Konkona ended up giving us a really easy, relatable, and comfortable on-screen couple, which made the film even better.

Kalki Koechlin and Kunal Roy Kapoor in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

Kalki and Kunal are both non-mainstream actors, so watching them on-screen was an interesting treat. Also, Kunal is not your stereotypical hero, with a hot bod and a macho attitude, and it was so refreshing to see that used in a normalised fashion.

Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor in Ki & Ka

Apart from the unconventional storyline, the lead couple also raised a few eyebrows. Not only was Arjun younger than Kareena, they had done different kinds of films by then and had established different identities. But they did manage to make a convincing, and progressive, married couple.

Irrfan Khan and Parvathy in Qarib Qarib Singlle

Irrfan Khan and Parvathy do a commendable job in this film. They brought different energies to the film and made it their own, giving us a lovable couple, who we would want to meet in real life.
