Rama comes from a family of esteemed film personalities. She is music director, MM Keeravani's (Rajamouli's cousin) wife, Sreevalli's younger sister. Because SS Rajamouli was in the films, assisting many directors and working mainly on the sets, he had known his would-be wife for quite a long time.
It is said that around the year 2000, Rama and her first husband had filed for a divorce with each other. As a result, their only son, SS Karthikeya was left in his mother's custody as per the court's judgment. Around this time, SS Rajamouli had supported Rama a lot and had always taken good care of her.

Since then, Rama has consistently designed costumes for most of her husband, SS Rajamouli's films. In many of her interviews, Rama Rajamouli had said that she didn't become a costume designer because she had wanted to or had wished for it. Instead, she had chosen to do it because her husband had wanted to work with someone who could read his mind.
