Late actor Shashi Kapoor’s son, Kunal Kapoor in an old interview, spoke about when his father was going through a huge financial crisis. In 2017, Kunal revealed that his father in the late 1960s had to sell his car and other things for his basic needs because he had no job or money. In fact, even Kunal’s mother, Jennifer Kendal, had to sell things “because of their financial problems.” It was after the 1971 release of “Sharmeelee” that “things got better”. Speaking to Rediff.com, Kunal said: “In the late 1960s he (Shashi Kapoor) didn’t have a job. We saw him a lot back then. We discovered Goa. He sold his sports car.
Mom also started selling stuff because we had no money. After Sharmeelee (1971), things changed again. There were a lot of ups and downs, but it never bothered us.” He further revealed that his father was one of the first actors to star in crossover films, along with MerchantIvory, who was a successful producer at the time, a directing team consisting of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
Legendary actor Shashi Kapoor, who made his debut with Yash Chopra’s Dharmputra, gave us many successful and memorable films including Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Prem Kahani and Deewaar (1975), Chakkar Pe Chakkar and Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Do Aur Do Paanch, Kali Ghata and Shaan (1980), Silsila (1981) and Namak Halaal to name a few. Shashi has also received four National Film Awards, Padma Bhushan and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Shashi Kapoor died on December 4, 2017 at the age of 79 in Mumbai.
