Before Vikram Vedha, Bollywood had a history of remaking South Asian movies.
The trend began in the 2000s with well-liked South remakes like Kick, Rowdy Rathore, and Ghajini starring the top Bollywood actors. However, you would have guessed that certain 1990s masterpieces and early 2000s movies were based on South flicks.
We’re referring to the movies we adored as children without realising they were Hindi remakes of popular South films. Some of these are verbatim remakes, while others feature significant Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu film adaptations.

Here are 7 Bollywood films you probably had no idea were remakes of South films:
1. Tere Naam
The popular movie Tere Naam starring Salman Khan is a remake of the Vikram-starring Sethu, a 1999 Tamil film.
Bala directed the original movie, which was recreated in a number of languages, including Hindi, which was directed by Satish Kaushik.

2. Hera Pheri
Few people are aware that the beloved cult comedy Hera Pheri is actually a South Indian adaptation.
Ramji Rao Speaking, a 2000 remake of the 1989 Malayalam film, became regarded as one of the greatest Bollywood comedies ever created by director Priyadarshan.

3. Nayak: The Real Hero
Bollywood had never before produced a political drama like Anil Kapoor’s Nayak.
The movie was essentially a frame-for-frame remake of the Arjun Sarja and Manisha Koirala-starring Mudhalvan from 1999, which was first released in Tamil.

4. Garam Masala
Garam Masala, starring Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, is one of the Hindi remake directors Priyadarshan made after Hera Pheri’s success.
But it was actually a remake of his own 1985 Malayalam film Boeing Boeing, which was in turn a replica of the 1965 movie of the same name.

5. Raja Babu
David Dhawan’s Raja Babu, which starred Govinda, Karisma Kapoor, and Shakti Kapoor, is a 1990s movie that no one could have predicted at the time was a remake of a South movie.
It is, nevertheless, a remake of the 1992 Tamil movie Rasukutty. Hindi was given a remake in 1994.

6. Housefull
One of Bollywood’s most well-known comedy franchises is Sajid Khan’s Houseful series.
However, the first instalment’s major plot, which starred Deepika Padukone, Riteish Deshmukh, Akshay Kumar, and Lara Dutta, was adapted from the 1998 Tamil drama Kaathala Kaathala.

7. Judwaa
Judwaa, another movie starring David Dhawan, was a remake of the 1994 Telugu film Hello Brother, which starred Nagarjuna Akkineni. Judwaa even had a sequel with Varun Dhawan.
The 1992 Hong Kong action comedy Twin Dragons starring Jackie Chan also served as inspiration for the Tamil movie.
