From 'Lagaan' to 'Laapataa Ladies': Aamir Khan Productions' Oscar Journey

Kiran Rao's film "Laapataa Ladies" has been chosen as India's official entry for the upcoming Oscars. This is the third time a movie from Aamir Khan's production company, Aamir Khan Productions, has been selected to represent India at the Academy Awards.

The 'Lagaan' Legacy

The first movie was "Lagaan," starring Aamir Khan himself. It wasn't just chosen as India's official entry but also got nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards. This epic sports drama, written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, was only the third Indian film ever to be nominated in this category.

"Lagaan" brought about many changes in Indian filmmaking. It was one of the first Bollywood movies to use 'sync sound' (recording sound live on set), and it had specialized teams for each part of the filmmaking process, making it more efficient. The film's assistant directors included people who have become famous directors today, like Reema Kagti, Apoorva Lakhia, and Kiran Rao herself. Aamir and Kiran met while making "Lagaan," and their relationship grew stronger over time.

Sadly, "Lagaan" didn't win the Oscar. It lost to the Bosnian film "No Man's Land." Aamir was so disappointed that he stopped going to any award shows after that.

'Taare Zameen Par' and Another Oscar Hope

Next came "Taare Zameen Par," Aamir's first movie as a director. It's a touching story about a boy with dyslexia who is helped by an art teacher, played by Aamir, to discover his true potential. This movie was also chosen as India's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 81st Academy Awards. Interestingly, it was competing against another movie directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, "Jodhaa Akbar."

'Laapataa Ladies' Completes the Circle

"Laapataa Ladies" is a special moment for Aamir Khan Productions because Kiran Rao, who started as an assistant director on their first movie, is now the director of a film that could potentially be nominated for an Oscar, and maybe even win! It's a great achievement for her and the production company.

In short:

  • "Laapataa Ladies" is India's official entry for the Oscars.
  • It's the third film from Aamir Khan Productions to be selected.
  • "Lagaan" was the first, and it even got nominated for an Oscar.
  • "Taare Zameen Par" was the second film from Aamir Khan Productions to be India's official entry.
  • "Laapataa Ladies" is a special achievement for Kiran Rao, who started as an assistant director on "Lagaan."
