1. When she was just 6 years old, Urmila Matondkar made her acting debut as a child artist.

It was a 1980 Marathi film named Zaakol. She did her Mumbai schooling and completed her Pune University degree in Arts (Philosophy).

2. She made her 1989 adult debut in the movie ‘Chanakya’ opposite Kamal Haasan.

The film became a success and consequently, she received several acting offers.

3. Her first Bollywood movie, Narsimha, was released in 1991, featuring a second lead actress.

Later, in the Ghost Comedy Chamatkar, she worked opposite Shah Rukh Khan, which became a big hit among children.

4. In view of the fact that Bollywood movies were more male-centric before it was a woman-centric or a love tale, there was no space for women to shine.

Thus, when she starred opposite Jugal Hansraj in the romantic drama Aa Gale Lag Ja, she gained wider recognition.

5. In her filmography, Rangeela, directed by Ram Gopal Verma, is considered one of the best films.

She became a sensation and earned her first nomination for best actress for Filmfare as well.

6. 1999 was possibly the actress’s most dramatic year. That year, Matondkar had six film releases, of which four films — Jaanam Samjha Karo, Hum Tum Pe Marte Hain, Mast, and Dillagi — tanked at the box office and received critics’ negative reviews.

The movie Kaun and Khoobsoorat, however, is still a fan favourite.

7. She became very picky with the scripts in the early 2000s. She has made some amazing movies, including Bhoot, Jungle, Ek Haseena Thi, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, and many more.

8. She made her Marathi film debut as a lead actress in 2014 with the film entitled Ajoba.

In the film, she played the role of Purva Rao, a wildlife activist searching for leopards.

9. In several stage plays, Urmila Matondkar has participated as well. She lent her voice to Asha Bhonsle for the Asha and Friends Vol 1 album.

With Jeetendra and Shiamak Davar, she has also hosted the celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa.

10. Little do you know that a trained professional dancer is Urmila Matondkar.

This is why, with Terence Lewis and Javed Jaffrey, she was approached to judge the dance reality show Chak Dhoom Dhoom.

11. Urmila Matondkar has been active in India with several charitable organisations promoting women’s causes.

She sponsored the Angeli Foundation, for example, which is working with Manish Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra to empower the Girl Child in India.

12. In 2019, Matondkar joined the Indian National Congress and contested, but lost, from the Mumbai North constituency.

She withdrew from the party after a few months.

13. Urmila Matondkar belongs to the Hindu family of Marathis. Shivinder Singh, her father, is a lecturer, while Rukshana Sultana, her mother, is a homemaker.

The elder sister of Urmila, Mamta Matondkar, is also an actress. Her elder brother, Kedar Matondkar, served in the Indian Air Force as an aircraft repair technician.

14. Urmila Matondkar was in a relationship with a prominent director, Ram Gopal Varma, according to the media.

She and the director have produced several hit movies.

15. In 2016, Urmila tied the wedding knot with Mohsin Akhtar Mir, a businessman based in Kashmir.

In modelling, Mohsin also tried his luck and appeared in the film ‘Luck By Chance’.

16. One of the industry’s most popular actresses who used to get a heavy paycheck from producers was Urmila Matondkar.

Her net worth is expected to be $20 million.

17. In the film, Urmila Matondkar has done many item songs. The most famous, however, was the iconic ‘Chamma Chamma’ from the film China Gate.

I guess my positions were brave and fortunate. I am not yet turning into a professional actress. I never made any tall statements. I’m a female actress, period. With a fair amount of panache, I want to do every form of function. I want to be a fair mix of style and substance.
