The chemistry between Southern icon Nagarjuna and Tabu was evident when they were seen together in the 1996 love picture Ninne Pelladata, and audiences immediately wanted to see them in future films together. He was previously married to Lakshmi Daggubati, but the pair divorced, and he later married actress Amala Paul. While his family issues were being resolved, rumours of him becoming too close to his dear buddy Tabu began to circulate.

According to reports, the two dated for over ten years before realising that his family life was being disrupted and calling it quits. Tabu and Nagarjuna’s wife were best friends, and Tabu reportedly stayed at their home whenever she came to Hyderabad. Although it was never proven whether they were actually together, several media accounts and sources suggest they were.
Nagarjuna addressed the rumours and spoke about their friendship in an interview with TOI. “Yes, Tabu is one of my best friends. Our acquaintance began when I was 21 or 22 years old and she was just 16 years old. It’s almost as if I’ve lived half a life… There isn’t much discussion regarding our friendship. I have nothing negative to say about her. My face lights up when you say her name… That’s all there is to it. When I say things like that, it’s your choice whether or not you read them… She is a lovely person and a lovely friend in my opinion. He stated, “She will always be.”
Even his wife, Amala, has denied the allegations, saying in an interview with Mumbai Mirror that she is unaffected. “Do people really wonder what Amala’s best friend is doing in her house when there are significant crises like bombings and floods hitting Mumbai?” It’s extremely depressing. Nobody should be interested in what goes on in my house. I am content. I’m sure she’s hurt, but we never talk about it. Tabu is one of the people I communicate with from Mumbai, in addition to Danny Denzongpa, my rakhi brother. And, yeah, when she gets here, she stays with us,” she replied.
